Insider: Chiefs Closer To Coach Selection?

Insider: Chiefs Closer To Coach Selection?

Kaizer Chiefs are getting closer to selecting their preferred permanent head coach for next season, the Siya crew understands.

There were many factors that determine which coach would be at the top of Amakhosi's short list, and those who may have been higher up in priority in the past could now change based on their respective availability.

As a result Siya sources have indicated that Spanish mentor Raul Caneda could have moved ahead of the others. At the moment, there are question marks as to whether Pitso Mosimane could be brought in by Chiefs.

Siya sources have added that Caneda's CV and track record matches what Amakhosi are looking at to bring back the club's glory days.

Caneda was already one of the top five candidates the Siya crew had placed in Chiefs' shortlist and Soccer Laduma wrote the following feature discussing the 5 Things Raul Caneda Could Bring To Kaizer Chiefs.

"There are many (challenging) factors about Pitso Mosimane and Manqoba Mngqithi and that's why they are intensifying their talks with Raul (Caneda). He was actually one of the first five on the original shortlist and they have been talking about him for some time now and he has overtaken Pitso on the priority list," said the Siya source.

"They believe that looking at his history he could be the one to change the team's fortunes from next season. So for now we say he is the top priority ahead of coach Pitso (Mosimane)," the source observed.

A second Siya source stated how these developments could effect another candidate in the shortlist, Manqoba Mngqithi.

"No, I don't think at this time there is chance for Mngqithi. They know it will be difficult to get him if Sundowns are renewing his contract. But they also don't want to feel like they are trying to destabilise Sundowns and that's why they are looking at the Spanish coach who was on the shortlist (Raul Caneda). So, for next season I think it will be Caneda to take over from Cavin Johnson," the source added.

55-year-old Caneda is not coaching a team currently but in the past he has mentored clubs such as Al- Nassr and Al-Ittihad from Saudi Arabia. In Europe, he was the assistant manager for Real Sociedad and UD Almeria in Spain.

This doesn't mean Caneda's already selected as Chiefs' next coach, but Siya sources have indicated that the Spaniard has moved up significantly in the priority list.

Soccer Laduma contacted Chiefs for a comment but no response was received by the time this story was published.
