Rulani Sends CWC Message To Sundowns

Wydad Casablanca coach Rulani Mokwena has spoken about the four African teams competing at the FIFA World Cup, including his former side Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sundowns, Wydad, Esperance and Al Ahly will represent the African continent at the newly revamped Club World Cup in the United States in June.

The South African coach believes all four clubs are capable of doing well at the tournament despite being pitted in tough groups.

"I think we can expect the African clubs to do very well and I've been fortunate enough to work with two of the four that have qualified – Mamelodi Sundowns, of course, because I was there and helped the club qualify, so I have great regard and warm wishes for them to do exceptionally well," said Mokwena, as per Pan African Football.

"Their group is tough, but I think the quality that they have with the players and team they will send to represent us as Africans is extremely strong. I think also, with Al Ahly, they have the pedigree, the history, the experience of participating in this competition, and for sure I think they will do well.

"And then, of course, with Esperance, they've also got a very strong squad, a team that has done great things for the last three or four years on the continent, and in their domestic competitions, so I would expect them to reach the expectations and perform to a level that will bring a lot of prestige and respect to the continent.

"And then, of course, my excitement is for us as Wydad – I think we will surprise a lot of people, we've got some very difficult games, and we've got a very strong group."

Wydad were drawn in Group G against Manchester City, Juventus and Al Ain.
