Spanish Strategist Emerges As Contender For Pirates

A Spanish strategist could be among coaches to be considered to replace Jose Riveiro at Orlando Pirates, the Siya crew has learnt.

With Pirates potentially seeking a new head coach at the end of the season, Spanish tactician Ferran Sibila has emerged as a candidate under consideration.

Sources close to the Soweto giants have revealed that the coach’s representatives are exploring opportunities for him to coach in the PSL.

A Diverse Coaching Portfolio

Ferran Sibila’s coaching career spans multiple countries and roles. He began as an assistant coach at GIF Sundsvall in Sweden’s Allsvenskan during the 2017–2018 seasons.

He then moved to IFK Goteborg, serving as an assistant coach from 2019 to 2021.

In September 2020, following the departure of head coach Poya Asbaghi, Sibila briefly took over as caretaker manager.

In 2021, Sibila joined English side Barnsley FC as an assistant coach in the EFL Championship.

He returned to Sweden in 2022, taking on the role of development coach at Malmo FF, focusing on players out on loan.

Recent Endeavours and Future Prospects

In November 2023, Sibila was appointed as the head coach of Finnish champions HJK Helsinki.

However, due to licensing requirements, he served as an associate coach until he could obtain the necessary UEFA Pro License.

He began the UEFA Pro License training with the Scottish FA in May 2024. Later that year, in August 2024, Sibila was named head coach of Swedish Allsvenskan club IFK Varnamo.

Potential Fit for Pirates

Sibila’s extensive experience in European football, combined with his focus on player development and tactical analysis, aligns with the ambitions of clubs like Pirates.

His history of contributing to team successes, such as IFK Goteborg’s Svenska Cupen win in the 2019–20 season, showcases his capability to impact clubs positively.

As Pirates evaluate their coaching options for the upcoming season, Ferran Sibila’s international experience and developmental approach make him a noteworthy candidate for the role.
