On Monday, the local football fraternity were left shocked after Sundowns, via a statement, revealed that there would be a number of changes taking place within its technical team.

As such, Mokwena was appointed a new role as the club's head coach, with Manqoba Mngqithi and Steve Komphela taking up the roles of senior coach and first team coach respectively.

After getting his tenure off to a winning start with a resounding victory over the Team of Choice, Mokwena opened up on his new role.

"How do I feel? I feel enormous sense of gratitude and appreciation for being bestowed with a huge responsibility but also, it's a collective effort. Nothing changes because I am just as important as everyone else in this club, if not less important," Mokwena told journalists after the game.

"There's far more important people at Mamelodi Sundowns than myself, I'm just a small piece of the puzzle that tries to give their best for this organization and I will continue to do that. We still have coach Manqoba who is esteemed and a top coach. We still have coach Steve who is esteemed and a top coach and his pedigree speaks for itself. Coach Wendell and the rest of our technical team, so nothing changes.

"My importance does not get elevated at all, instead like Nelson Mandela said some of the best leaders are the ones who lead from the back and you don't hear much about them except for in a moment of crisis where they standup and protect everyone else.

"But really to tell you the truth, just gratitude towards the President, the Chairman and the Mamelodi Sundowns family. Of course, I cannot not say that because it's a genuine sense of appreciation for the belief and the trust. But for sure for me its business as usual because the club comes first and it's a decision that the club made and at the end of the day, no individual is more important than the club and that includes myself," he added.
