The story
Shortly after helping Mamelodi Sundowns secure their spot in the semi-finals of the 2024/25 CAF Champions League, Ronwen Williams was pictured with a thoughtful gift from a devoted fan.
Sundowns advanced with a 1-0 aggregate win over Esperance de Tunis, following a goalless draw in Tuesday night's second-leg clash at Stade Olympique de Tunisia. The victory also served as sweet revenge for the Brazilians, who were eliminated by Esperance at the same stage last season.
"Ronza" kept back-to-back clean sheets in the tie and was rewarded with a frame-worthy present from Tunisian youth goalkeeper coach Mohamed Jeljli — a big admirer of the Bafana Bafana captain.
The two did cross paths in last season's CAF Champions League, and this time, Jeljli gifted Williams a hand-drawn portrait, which the Sundowns shot-stopper proudly shared on his Instagram stories, thanking him for the heartfelt gesture.
Take a look:
It's not the first time Ronza has been shown love by fans on the continent. During the most recent FIFA International break, Williams attracted plenty of fanfare in the Ivory Coast.
Before leading Bafana Bafana to a 2-0 win over Benin in Abidjan, Williams was seen signing autographs for school children outside their training base.
Williams' star power continues to rise after his 2023 Africa Cup of Nations heroics, where he led Bafana to its first AFCON medal in over two decades, and also earned himself the Goalkeeper of the Tournament accolade and a top 10 spot in the Yashin Trophy standings at the Ballon d'Or awards.
