The story
Under the leadership of Belgian tactician Hugo Broos, the positive feeling surrounding the senior men's national team has been restored.
At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in the Ivory Coast last year, Bafana secured their first medal in the tournament since 2000 by claiming the Bronze in a penalty shoot-out win over Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Thabang Monare was part of that side as one of Broos' four central midfielders and eased the load of Teboho Mokoena and Yaya Sithole in four matches, including the third-place play-off against the DRC and that memorable round of 16 win over Morocco.
With Bafana currently enjoying incredible 18-match unbeaten run following back-to-back wins over Lesotho and Benin in the World Cup qualifiers, it's not far fetched to consider South Africa as favourites for this year's AFCON.
Speaking on the "iDiski Dine" podcast, Monare detailed how the players looked on longingly at the Ivorians celebrating their AFCON triumph and the inspiration they took from that.
The Sekhukhune United midfielder also revealed the amount of self belief the group had going into the tournament last year and that the experience from that tournament will hold them in good stead for December in Morocco.
