The story
Mamelodi Sundowns star, Lebohang Maboe, is readying himself for his seventh season as a Masandawana and will hope to add to his haul of 12 trophies won at the Tshwane Giants.
The six-time league winner opened up about how he fell in love with the beautiful game and how he was surrounded by the game from an early age.
Maboe was inspired by his is father, Sidwell Maboe, a former Orlando Pirates forward who also turned out for also turned out for Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport United in the 1990s.
The 29-year-old told Nounouche Online's Koketso Kgogome about how his father and uncle spent hours on the training grounds when he was a child, leaving him curious about how devoted they were to the game.
"I didn't really understand it at first, but I was always there, watching them, trying to figure out what made football so special," shares Maboe, who revealed that despite his father's success in football, he was never under too much pressure to play the game.
"There was never any pressure from my dad, It was always more about fatherly love. He never forced football on me, but he always supported me."
During his first season at Masandawana, Maboe told the Sowetan that daily conversations with dad Sidwell help keep him humble, showing the two have always maintained a strong bond.
"He's really happy seeing me doing well. We talk almost every day. He tells me what I've done right and what I shouldn't do. He plays a very important role in my life‚ too‚ helping keep me grounded," said Maboe back in 2019.
