In an interview earlier this week, the Spanish tactician insisted that the Argentine's potential return to the Catalan giants depends mainly on himself.
Xavi has previously sung a similar tune amid rumours that Messi could be heading back to the club, with it now reported that the 35-year-old's camp is surprised by the sentiment given the current situation.
According to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, they are confused as they are still awaiting a formal proposal from the 2022/23 LaLiga champions.
It is claimed that Messi's entourage maintains that an agreement would already have been struck if Barcelona had made an offer to the seven-time Ballon d'Or, whose priority is reportedly to re-sign for his boyhood side.
A lucrative proposal has arrived from Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, with rumours suggesting the Paris Saint-Germain forward does not want to delay a decision over his future.
