The Catalan club is said to be pushing to solve its financial issues to be able to re-sign the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner amid rumours the Argentine would like his future to become clear sooner rather than later.
It is reported that Barcelona have still not made an official offer to Messi, whose contract at Paris Saint-Germain expires next month, but Xavi has insisted he is certain his ex-colleague can still play a key role at the LaLiga giants.
Speaking in a recent interview, the Spanish tactician admitted that Messi could have certain doubts over a return to his boyhood club, such as heading back to Barca following the departures of lifelong friends and former teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
"It's difficult to put yourself in the shoes of a player who has won everything. It is difficult, isn't it? I don't know what doubts he might have," he told Sport.
"Maybe that it's another project, that important players who have a very good relationship like Busi and Jordi are leaving. I don't know, I'm not in his head.
"With the relationship I have with him, I think I've been very clear. The doors are open to him here. If he wants to come, I have no doubts as a coach, none, none at all.
"I think he would bring a lot to us. Therefore, and I have already said in the last few days when you have asked me, it basically depends on his personal decision."
