Lamine Yamal: I Like Messi Comparisons But…

Spanish wonderkid Lamine Yamal has expressed his appreciation for being compared to Lionel Messi, but also has reservations about the sentiment.

There are plenty of similarities when it comes to the early stages of Lamine Yamal's career and the Rosario native. Both are products of Barcelona famed youth academy La Masia, both caught the attention of the world in the Joan Gamper trophy – Messi against Juventus in 2005 and the Spaniard against Tottenham Hotspur in 2023.

Those comparisons have not stopped as the teenager continues his ascendance to the top of world football, and, while the skillful winger is grateful for being compared to the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, he wants to write his own history.

"I like that they compare me to the greatest player in the history of football, but I want to be myself," Yamal said on El Hormiguero when asked about being spoken about alongside the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner. "Reaching Messi's level is impossible."

There is a possibility that the two players could play against one another in the Finalissima in 2026, but even if they do share the same pitch on that occasion, it will not be the first time the duo's paths cross.

In 2007, Messi and a six-month old Lamine Yamal did a photoshoot for charity and now the Barcelona native has hinted that perhaps the Argentine icon may have blessed him with some of his football talents.

"Messi gave me some of his powers during that photoshoot, but I still have a lot to offer," he added.
