The Portugal captain surprised many this week when, in a conversation with his former Manchester United colleague Rio Ferdinand, he sided with Mbappe after being asked to choose between the ex-Paris Saint-Germain man and Benzema.
Ronaldo shared a dressing room at Real Madrid with Benzema for nine years, during which the duo helped the Spanish giants claim four UEFA Champions League titles.
While the 39-year-old did not explain his opinion, fans online accused him of treating his ex-teammate poorly with his comment, especially considering he has not played alongside Mbappe in his career.
According to Diario AS, Benzema was quick to share a picture of his 2022 Ballon d'Or on his Instagram story, which the publication believes was in response to Ronaldo's remark.
Mbappe, 25, is yet to win football's most prestigious individual award, although he is once again among the nominees this year.
