New Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has revealed how Harry Maguire reacted to being stripped of the armband at the Red Devils.
Check Out: Ten Hag: Why I Made Fernandes Man Utd Captain
Last week, the 28-year-old was announced as the team's official new leader after Erik ten Hag decided it was time for a change of skipper at this past campaign's Carabao Cup winners.
Maguire lost his place under the Dutchman last season and has been linked with a departure since, and many therefore expected that Fernandes, who wore the armband in his absence, would succeed him in his role.
After the decision was confirmed, the England international admitted to being disappointed in a statement he released on social media, but United's new captain has said his teammate has been supportive of him behind the scenes.
"He gave me congratulations and he said he is really happy for me," he said, according to the Daily Mirror.
"I understand his position is not the best at the moment. It has to be difficult for him but he came and said congratulations to me and I am happy about that because we have always had a good relationship.
"Everyone already knew about the situation with H [Maguire], but no one knew who would be the next captain. So [Ten Hag broke the news] in a team meeting with everyone together because it's something we have to do more often, to keep the things inside and give the compliments inside to ourselves."
