Former Pirates Star Nominated For Prestigious Ligue 1 Award

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Marshall Munetsi has received a nomination for a prestigious award in France's top division.

The Zimbabwean made his way to Ligue 1 and Stade Reims in 2019, and following his move from the Buccaneers, the 2022/23 campaign has been arguably the midfielder's best.

The 26-year-old has already managed to find the back of net six times and assist three goals this season, a career-best for the former Baroka FC man since making his way to Europe.

Munetsi's performances have not gone unnoticed, with the Harare native recently being nominated for the Marc-Vivien Foe Prize.

The trophy goes to the best African player plying their trade in France's top league, and the southern African is among 11 players who are in the running to lift it this year.

The Warriors star has played an integral role in Reims' progression from fighting a relegation battle to ascending in the league and making it all the way to eighth position.

The midfielder has also garnered attention of some Premier League clubs in recent transfer windows, and winning the award will likely only ramp up interest from teams in England.

The player will, however, have a hard time pipping the likes of Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi and reigning champion Seko Fofana of RC Lens to the illustrious silverware named in honour of the Cameroon midfielder who died on the pitch in 2003.

The winner of the award will be announced on 30 May.

Here are the 11 nominees for the 2023 Marc-Vivien Foe Prize:

Yunis Abdelhamid (Morocco/Reims)

Mama Balde (Guinea-Bissau/Troyes)

Mohamed Camara (Mali/Monaco)

Habib Diallo (Senegal/Strasbourg)

Seko Fofana (Ivory Coast/Lens)

Achraf Hakimi (Morocco/PSG)

Chancel Mbemba (DR Congo/Marseille)

Terem Moffi (Nigeria/Nice)

Marshall Munetsi (Zimbabwe/Reims)

Hamari Traore (Mali/Rennes)

Salis Abdul Samed (Ghana/Lens)
