Van Dijk Confirms Intention On Liverpool Future

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the Dutch central defender's future in recent months.

After six years at the Merseyside club, the 33-year-old is now in the final year of his current deal at Anfield.

Despite his age, the Reds captain continues to show he is still one of the best in the world, being named as one of the nominees for the 2023/24 Premier League Player of the Season prize, but it has remained unclear whether or not he will be staying at the club beyond this campaign.

Now, the Dutchman has put rumours of any desire of an exit from him to bed following the announcement of his intentions with the club.

"At both teams [Liverpool and the Netherlands], I am still Virgil van Dijk, the big leader, and I certainly want to remain that for the next two years," he told Sky Sports News.

Van Dijk's future was further thrown into doubt after the manager who brought him to the six-time European champions, Jurgen Klopp, left the club earlier this year.

However, now, his compatriot Arne Slot is at the helm, and the defender believes the coach can add value and more silverware to the club's illustrious trophy cabinet.

"The thing is I want to play the best season I can, again. I want to be important and stay important for the club," Van Dijk added.

"Whatever happens next year, we'll see. Everything happens for a reason, that's how I see it.

"And for now there's been no changes in my situation, but I'm very calm about it and there's no reason for me to start thinking for something else.
