Wydad Get First Win Under Rulani

Wydad Athletic Club officially collected their first win under Rulani Mokwena with their 2-0 victory in the Excellence Cup on Tuesday evening.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach did not get his career with the Red Castle off to a winning start as he suffered a 1-0 defeat to MAS Fes in their 2024/25 Botola Pro Inwi opener.

A few days after that loss, however, and the South African tactician has now exorcised those demons by claiming his first official win in Moroccan football after they thwarted Jeunesse Sportive Massira on Tuesday evening.

Mokwena made sweeping changes from the side that started their first league match of the season, with Cassius Mailula being handed his first start of the campaign, but it was one of the survivors from the opening match who opened the scoring, when Oussama Zemraoui found the back of the net in the 42nd minute.

The scoreline would stay 1-0 for the majority of the second half before new signing Nassim Chadli struck in the 92nd minute to earn his side their first victory in all competitions in 2024/25.

After the match, the Soweto-born 37-year-old congratulated his players and his opposition, but stressed that there was still much work to be done despite the victory.

"Congratulations to the players of Shabab Al-Massira, they played a good match today," Mokwena said, as per El Botola.

"We are still far from our level and have not shown our full potential. We can do better. This match will give confidence to the players as well as our fans.

"Wydad fans are among the best I have seen. When you see them singing and supporting the team, they deserve to be happy, and we will try to do that.

"We have more work to do, but I am happy with what the players have done. I know everyone's names because I have watched each player's matches individually. This is part of my job; to analyse and know information about the players, how they play and their statistics before signing them."
