Despite going in front 86 minutes into the Group D tie through the former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker, the Red Devils were unable to hang on to all three points after they conceded just five minutes later.
The Egyptian giants enjoyed more possession and hit the target five more times than their opponents on the night, but ultimately could not secure the result away from home in Tanzania.
Speaking after the game, Swiss tactician Koller appeared annoyed with his team's lack of efficiency in front of goal at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.
"We had so many chances to score in the first half but unfortunately we couldn't convert them," he said, according to KingFut.
"There was some improvement in the second half as we had more control and created more chances but it wasn't enough in the end.
"I'm happy with (Amr) El-Sulya's return because he's one of our most experienced players in the team and he gave us more fluidity in midfield when he came on."
According to Transfermarkt, Tau has scored five goals in 14 appearances for Al Ahly so far this season.
