Ex-Les Bleus midfielder Christophe Dugarry recently accused the Los Blancos No. 9 of being average "for a very long time", with the 25-year-old having scored only once in his previous seven appearances for his country.
The forward has also been subjected to criticism in Spain for his performances for Real, despite scoring three goals in his opening five matches for the team, with France's 2-1 defeat to Italy on Friday in the UEFA Nations League only bringing more attention to the ex-Paris Saint-Germain man.
Mbappe recently insisted the concerns among supporters in France do not worry him, comments 97-time Les Bleus international Bixente Lizarazu has taken issue with.
"You can't be insensitive to the feelings of the French team's supporters, to the frustrations they may have, to the questions they may have," he wrote in a column for L'Equipe.
"You have to try to answer them, give them hope, it's part of the job and the emotional connection you have to have with your fans.
"Perhaps he is less serene than usual, more tense because he is slow to find the best footballing version of himself.
"Mbappe is no longer as explosive or decisive as he was. He remains a very good scorer, a very good player, of course, but he is no longer scary as before."
