The Six Managers That Have Rejected Bayern So Far!

The Six Managers That Have Rejected Bayern So Far!

With Bayern Munich's managerial situation for next season still unclear, we took a look at six coaches who have been ruled out of being the new manager for the German giants next season!

Ever since the Bavarian giants confirmed that Thomas Tuchel would not be continuing his duties as their manager come the 2024/25 season in February, almost every week since there has been a new head coach close to succeeding him in the Allianz Arena hotseat.

Whenever it seemed that the German juggernauts were moving closer to appointing a new manager, though, they failed to get over the final hurdle, so we decided to highlight who will not be the new Bayern Munich manager.

Xabi Alonso

At the top of Bayern's wish list was Xabi Alonso. Since assuming coaching responsibilities at Bayer Leverkusen last season, the Spaniard has taken the Black and Reds from being one position above the relegation zone to becoming the first German side ever to complete a Bundesliga campaign unbeaten. Like they do with many of the top players who break through the upper echelons of the German top flight, Bayern presumed they could lure their former midfielder away from the BayArena, but that was not the case. Instead, the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner confirmed that he had no desire to leave his invincible German champions, leaving Bayern having to look for a new boss elsewhere.

Julian Nagelsmann

After being rejected by their top target, Die Roten turned their attention to one of their former managers, Julian Nagelsmann. The 36-year-old tactician's own future with the German national team was unclear as his deal, at that point, was only until the end of the 2024 UEFA European Championship, and it seemed a return to his previous job was likely. That mooted deal, however, failed to materialise at the final moment as Nagelsmann signed a contract extension with the German Football Association instead to be head coach until the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ralf Rangnick

Another national team manager would rebuff Bayern after Nagelsmann. Ralf Rangnick, who was believed to be close to signing a contract with the record German title holders, decided against joining the six-time European champions in favour of staying in his post as Austria national team manager. The 65-year-old did make it public that Bayern had been in contact with him, but ultimately decided against taking the job as he wished to lead his home nation to the upcoming European Championship in Germany.

Oliver Glasner

Unlike the aforementioned candidates, Bayern's inability to appoint Oliver Glasner as their new manager was not entirely the Austrian's doing, but rather Crystal Palace's insistence on hike up their manager's release clause. While he had a stuttering start to life at Selhurst Park, the Salzburg native managed to guide the Eagles to six wins in their final seven Premier League matches of the season while playing some expansive football in the process. This form led to the London-based side valuing the 49-year-old at €100 million (R1.9 billion), while the record Bundesliga winners were reportedly only willing to part with €18 million (R357 million) for his services.

Thomas Tuchel

After seeing rejection in their pursuits of Alonso, Nagelsmann, Rangnick and Glasner, the chiefs at Sabener Strasse decided to turn their attention back to their outgoing manager, Tuchel. Before their final league match of the 2023/24 season against Hoffenheim, the 50-year-old admitted that there were discussions over a possible U-turn on their original decision to part ways, but the two parties failed to reach an agreement over the continuation of their relationship and thus the decision from February still stands.

Roger Schmidt

The next German tactician to reject Bayern was Benfica boss Roger Schmidt. There had been rumours Bayern were trying to lure him back to his homeland, but the 57-year-old put those rumours to bed emphatically when he stated, "It's clear to me that I'll stay at Benfica until 2026. That's what I want. That's why I signed a new contract. I'm not on the market."

Candidates such as Zinedine Zidane, Roberto De Zerbi and Hansi Flick are seemingly available, but it will have to be up to Bayern's new sporting CEO Max Eberl to return to the drawing board to see who the right person is to have them challenging for domestic and continental honours once again.
