Mphela on failed business ventures
Katlego Mphela continues to find his feet since retirement from professional football in 2019 and was encouraged on social media recently for his new job at VW.
Mphela's post football retirement journey hasn't been the smoothest. He revealed in an interview with Andile Ncube on Metro FM's Sports Night Amplified that he tried out various business paths to keep the money flowing over the last couple of years.
From opening a Shisa Nyama to finding himself in the vicious tenders world, Mphela spoke about how difficult it was for him to find something after his sudden retirement and to sustain himself with just savings:
"It doesn't matter how much money you have in your bank account, as long as there's no income and it's money coming out, eventually you will go broke. So, your money must make you money," said the 38-year-old.
Mphela also opened up about coming to terms with retiring earlier than planned due to a broken ankle and the various options he considered taking on following his retirement, aged 34:
"It was difficult for me because football was the only thing I knew then. When they tell you can't play anymore, you start thinking about other things. I thought about going into coaching, I thought about going into business, it took me a while to get out of that cloud.
"I couldn't believe it, that I'm not playing anymore, it took almost two years to start doing other things," said Mphela.
