Netflix doccie for Sundowns Ladies
The upcoming Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies documentary will follow Jerry Tshabalala's outfit in their journey to become the very first Queens of the CAF Women's Champions League back in 2021, while also shining a spotlight on the battle for gender equality, the vulnerabilities of life's challenges and family responsibilities and heartfelt human connections.
This story follows the team's incredible journey through the eyes of several players, including head coach Tshabalala and the Mamelodi Sundowns Club Chairman Tlhopie Motsepe, among many others.
The film was a passion project of the chairman, who revealed the reasons behind the making of the film:
"We embarked on this journey for two reasons: The first was to promote women's football and inspire future generations of female footballers in Africa. The second reason was to use the power of storytelling to touch on the challenges that female soccer players face and encourage new sponsors to come into the market and galvanise the women's game," revealed Motsepe, who added:
"We are incredibly proud to share our story with fans of film and fans of football across the world. Credit must go to our ladies team players for their spirit and amazing personalities, as well as Fell and Co for producing the film; and of course, to Netflix and Roc Nation Sports International for sharing this unique African sports story with the world."
The "Banyana Ba Style" film will be available globally on Netflix from 22 November. Notably, the Sundowns Ladies film also follows shortly after the launch of a football-themed picture on 17 November, the Queenstown Kings, which features the Mamelodi Sundowns men's team.
"We are proud to have facilitated the licensing of this film to enable a whole new audience of Netflix viewers to gain access to the special story of the Mamelodi Sundowns ladies team," said Lori York, the Executive Vice President for Television and Film at Roc Nation.
"They have been trailblazers on the women's football scene, and sharing their story offers the potential to inspire so many more female athletes around the world," she added.
Talking at the pre-screening of the film, Caroline Brouckaert, who made her directorial debut, said she always wanted to tell stories that can bring about positive change and "help us all feel more connected to one another."
"I think this film has achieved both of those things. Making this film and getting to know the powerful women of Mamelodi Sundowns ladies team has been a privilege and an honour."

The Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies team is chasing glory once again in the CAF Women's Champions League as they defeated AS FAR in the semi-finals to book their place in the final against Sporting Casablanca.
Under the leadership of coach Tshabalala and captain Zanele Nhlapo, Banyana Ba Style play an entertaining brand of football that's coupled with a formidable defense, with Banyana Banyana star Andile Dlamini between the sticks.
They made history in 2021 by winning the first ever CAF Women's Champions League, and came close to defending their crown in 2022.
The club initially released this doccie in November last year, with "Banyana Ba Style" debuting on DStv's SuperSport and Mzansi Magic channels.

A Netflix documentary will take this status to a new level, with players like Melinda Kgadiete, Bambanani Mbane, Lelona Daweti, Kholosa Biyana and Ronaldinho lookalike Miche Minnies, likely to have interesting back stories to share to viewers.
Sundowns also released a special documentary focusing on the life of midfielder Lehlogonolo Mashigo, AKA Hlogi Mash, detailing how she balances her football career with her passion for music and dance.
If this Netflix documentary follows a similar story-telling theme to the Sundowns Ladies films we've seen already, then Downs fans are in for a treat!
