According to The Athletic, the Reds have agreed a fee of £110 million (R2.6 billion) with Brighton Hove Albion for Moises Caicedo's services.
That price tag will make the Ecuadorian the most expensive player in Premier League history mere weeks after Arsenal broke the record with their acquisition of Declan Rice from West Ham United.
Caicedo's personal terms are also not expected to be an issue, with a medical said to already be scheduled for Friday.
Chelsea were heavily linked with the 21-year-old for most of the off-season, having seen four bids rejected, but Liverpool have reportedly come in at the last minute to hijack the potential deal from the Blues, who were only willing to go as far as £100 million (R2.3 billion) for the holding midfielder.
The six-time European champions had been in desperate need of a midfield rejuvenation following the departures of Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, James Milner and former captain Jordan Henderson, but following the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, and now the likely acquisition of Caicedo, the Merseyside club have gone a long way to remedying that situation.
Chelsea are also in need of some quality midfielders in this transfer window after bidding farewell to N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and the same report now suggests they will likely turn their attention to luring Southampton's Romeo Lavia to Stamford Bridge after losing out on the aforementioned South American to their rivals.
