Earlier this month, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner publicly stated he would be joining MLS franchise Inter Miami, the club co-owned by legendary footballer David Beckham.
Messi was expected to return to Barcelona at the end of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain, but later said he was not willing to wait for a formal proposal after the events that led to his departure from the Catalan giants in 2021.
Firstpost has reported that Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas has told certain media outlets that Messi's deal in the United States will be worth around $50 million (R919 million) to $60 million (R1.1 billion) a year.
He also confirmed that Messi will make his first appearance for Inter Miami in a home game against Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup on 21 July, with the club also working to increase its stadium's capacity.
"I think there will always be a before and after Messi when we talk about the sport in the United States," Mas told the Miami Herald.
"I have a very, very strong-held belief that we can create in North America and the United States if not the greatest league, one of the top two leagues in the world. I cannot over-emphasise the magnitude of this announcement."
