Earlier this month, the diminutive Argentine decided to call time on his European career when he confirmed his departure from Paris Saint-Germain and stated that he will be signing with the Major League Soccer side co-owned by David Beckham.
Once he completes the move, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner will be looking to lead the American side off the foot of the Eastern Conference standings.
The club seems to be committed to turning their fortunes around, having also fired manager Phil Neville two weeks ago following a poor first half of the campaign.
Now, according to Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, the MLS side is looking to reunite Messi with his former Barca boss Gerardo "Tata" Martino.
The 35-year-old played under Martino at the Camp Nou in the 2013/14 season, scoring 41 goals under his countryman's tutelage and capturing a Supercopa de Espana title in the process.
The pair also worked together for the Argentina national team, during which they lost two Copa America finals to Chile.

Should Martino get the job, the Herons will be hoping the Rosario-born duo's second reunion bears more fruit, and with Messi having won a trophy with every team he has played for so far in his career, he will likely want that trend to continue with his new club.
