In Millions: How Much PSL Clubs Spent In January Transfer Window

After FIFA revealed the total money PSL clubs spent on transfer fees, Soccer Laduma highlights clubs who went big and notable signings.

FIFA recently released their comprehensive January transfer report titled 'Snapshot', with the total incoming and outgoing transfer fees of all the countries revealed.

According to the report, the English Premier League was ranked the highest, with a total spend of $621,6 million (R11,4 billion).

In South Africa, FIFA recorded PSL clubs to have spent a combined $650, 000 (R12 million) in outgoing transfer fees, which is one of the lowest in recent years and five times lesser than one year ago.

The figure would come as a surprise but generally PSL total outgoing transfer fees have gone higher when Mamelodi Sundowns acquired players from Europe or South America.

In the 2024 January transfer window, PSL clubs were recorded by FIFA to have spent $3,06 million (R56,5 million), a total which was spiked after the Brazilians signed Matias Esquivel for $2,5 million (R46,7 million).

PSL clubs do not, ever, officially confirm transfer fees paid to clubs locally and the media is left to speculate based on the value of player contracts, including salaries, in most instances, to get the value of the deal. For example, according to local reports, Sundowns are believed to have spent over R20 million to sign Jayden Adams from Stellenbosch.

However, following an official report by FIFA, the quoted figures locally do not represent the exact fee that exchanged hands between clubs.

The value of Adams to Masandawana could exceed R20 million over a three-and-half year period, including salaries and signing on fees but it appears it's not necessarily a straight figure paid out by the Tshwane giants, according to transfer records by FIFA.

Other signings by the traditional big spenders, Sundowns, include Keanu Cupido from Cape Town City and Lucas Suarez, on loan from Argentinian club CA Telleres.

Kaizer Chiefs caught the eye with the signing of Makabi Lilepo from French third-tier outfit Valenciennes, Tashreeq Morris from SuperSport United and Thabo Cele, who arrived as a free agent from Russian club Fikel Voronezh.

AmaZulu made some good signings as well, after acquiring Bongani Zungu and Sibongiseni Mthethwa on a free market and Elmo Kimbindu from Chippa United.

Stellenbosch signed Lesiba Nku from Sundowns and Thato Khiba from TS Galaxy while SuperSport United boosted their ranks with Christian Saile, Lebohang Maboe and Abubaker Nasir, both on loan from the Brazilians.
