SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has explained the reason for recently having Eric Mulomowandau Mathoho at the club and touched on the side's possible interest in Siyanda Xulu as they continue to search for a central defender.
Mathoho was invited by SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt to train with the team, but was not taken with when the club went to KZN to wrap up their pre-season preparations. The experienced defender left Amakhosi after spending 11 years and is still on the look out for a club, with Polokwane City believed to be interested in bringing him on board ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Asked what happened with Mathoho at a press conference in Randburg on Tuesday afternoon, Matthews said the following.
"Nothing. Gavin invites a lot of people for training. He likes to look and look and look. Centre-back has been a position where we maybe need a bit more depth because Tyson (Thulani Hlatshwayo) has had concussion a few times and we have to look after him. Last year he missed five or six games through that and again he is not getting younger. We want him to stick around for a couple more years, so we need to preverse him.
"So, Gavin's been looking at a few centre-backs, but we won't be signing 'Tower' (Mathoho)."
Bafana Bafana vice-captain Xulu is currently without a club after his contract with Azerbaijan club Turan Tovuz was not renewed.

"We haven't had a chance to look at him at all. I don't know what his situation is, if his got other offers lined up. He is a guy we were prepared to look at. We've looked at five or six centre-backs. I've got a guy from Cyprus now, a South African player who has been playing in Cyprus for the last two years. He's 20 years old. it's a position we are looking to boost."
