After a hard-fought victory against Liberia on Tuesday night, Bafana Bafana is heading to the 2023 AFCON in the Ivory Coast. The tournament will span across January and February 2024. Bafana Bafana threw away a two-goal lead in the first leg match which saw heavy criticism being shot towards coach Hugo Broos, with fans expressing their confusion for his tactical changes and the timing of his substitution. Broos then also stormed out of the post-match interview room which was a question against his emotional quotient. Broos quickly apologized for his behaviour and said, "I let my emotions take control."
The coach knew that he and his team had it all to play for when they travelled to the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Liberia. The match in Liberia would take place on an artificial pitch which was a cause for concern. Slower passes and a bouncier pitch were worries for the traveling South Africans. But an early goal by Zakhela Lepasa brought confidence to 'The Boys." Liberia equalized in the 35th minute after a horrid bounce went past captain Ronwen Williams and into the net. The second half saw a revitalised Bafana. Tighter pressing and quicker passing saw a brilliant move which was started and finished by Mihlali Mayambela. Goal Bafana, 2-1. This is how the match ended, with South Africa qualifying for the 2023 AFCON.
