There was an immense amount of hype for the open-world samurai game, which has since gone on to receive critical acclaim, but the developers have noted that it was a difficult creative period for them after their last Infamous title.
Sucker Punch enjoyed incredible success with the Infamous franchise in the PlayStation 3 era, and Infamous Second Son was one of the flagship games at the launch of the PS4.
In previous articles, Sucker Punch noted how they struggled to settle on the direction they wanted to move. This was explained in a post on the official PlayStation blog, where they said, "Early on, we concluded that we wanted to build a large, open-world experience — and one that featured melee combat. But beyond that we were uncertain. Pirates? Rob Roy? The Three Musketeers? All these were considered — but we kept coming back to feudal Japan and telling the story of a samurai warrior. Then one fateful fall afternoon we found a historical account of the Mongol invasion of Tsushima in 1274, and the entire vision clicked into place."
It seems that they tried and tested a few ideas after before settling on Ghost of Tsushima, with an 11-minute demo of an unreleased game called Prophecy having surfaced on the internet.
The game showcases stealth and sword combat, something that is a major part of Ghost of Tsushima, and it seems that this unreleased project was one of the ideas that they were toying with.
