The Last of Us Part 2 was one of the most was one of the most anticipated releases in the current console generation, and that is evident with the number of records set.
The game hit shelves on 19 June 2020, and went on to become the best-selling game of that month. In just three days, it became the fastest selling first-party PlayStation release to date.
Santa Monica Studios achieved 3.1 million sales in the first three days back in 2018, while Insominac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man went one better with 3.3 million copies in the same year.
However, Sony confirmed that after the first three days, Naughty Dog's masterpiece had sold more than 4 million copies.
Since then, the game has rocketed up the charts, becoming the third best-selling game of the year, and the 8th best-selling game over a 12 month period.
In the USA, it achieved the highest launch month total when compared to any other release in 2020.
The game, which is not for the faint-hearted and most certainly not for anyone under the age of 18, will have to compete for spend with the last PlayStation exclusive of this generation, Ghost of Tsushima, which officially released on Friday, 17 July.
It will be interesting to see how Sucker Punch Productions' samurai epic will compete with Naughty Dogs gritty and violence tale of hatred and revenge.
