Gaming On The Rise During COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a surge in gaming, according to a report from the NPD Group.

People around the world have found themselves stuck indoors due to various levels of lockdown, and although gaming has been on the up over recent years, the pandemic has resulted in a further rise.

The report showcased that there has been an increase in the number of people playing games, and also an increase in how often they play across various platforms.

It was interesting to note that three out of four people played video games, and there was an increase of 32 million players between 2018 and 2020.

Players who enjoyed gaming for 5-15 hours per week increased by 2%, while gamers who played over 15 hours per week shot up by 6% to 20% of all players in the USA.

Smart phones, tablets and PCs were at the heart of the increase, while the report also indicated that a large number of people used more than one device to play games.

In the latest survey during the pandemic, 35% of gamers said that they played more often during the lockdown, and that around 6% of people experimented with a new device.

"Video games are one of the primary ways friends and family are staying connected through a difficult time," said Mat Piscatella, an NPD group analyst.
