Information reaching the Siya crew's desk is that Mamelodi Sundowns have been overtaken in the race for in-demand defender Olwethu Makhanya.
As reported by this publication last month, the young centre-back's fine performances for Stellenbosch FC garnered interest from the Brazilians, who were believed to have made headway in their pursuit of the 19-year-old.
The Tshwane giants, as reported by Soccer Laduma, had opened talks with the Cape Winelands outfit about the possibility of signing the lanky player, with the idea of loaning him back to Stellies for the 2023/24 season.
However, the latest news, as incoming from sources, is that MLS outfit Philadelphia Union FC have leapfrogged Sundowns into pole position for the signature of the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Season and have already entered into formal talks with his camp.
"Philadelphia have already started negotiating with the player and his team, it seems likely at this point that he will be going to the USA," a source revealed.
Indications from sources are that Makhanya penned a five- year deal with Stellenbosch last season, but as things stand, it is looking increasingly likely that he will be joining the likes of Njabulo Blom (St Louis City), Bongokuhle Hlongwane (FC Minnesota) and Tsiki Ntsabeleng (FC Dallas) next season.
