The Siya crew understands that Kaizer Chiefs will be making plans for when Itumeleng Khune brings an end to his playing career, with a search for a long-term replacement set to take place.
The club announced that the veteran net minder has signed a one-year contract, which will be his last as a player, before he takes up a new position, as the club confirmed he will be transitioning into a new coaching and ambassadorial role, working with the marketing division.
The new one-year deal will take the Ventersdorp-born man's time as a first-team Amakhosi player to 20 years, which will be a new record in terms of longevity at the Soweto giants. While he prepares for his final season as a player, Soccer Laduma understands that management will be planning for life after Khune, with a search for a goalkeeper happening both within their ranks and outside.
The Naturena-based outfit have produced their own goalkeepers in the past and one of them, Bruce Bvuma, is a candidate to take charge of the position on a long- term basis but has not been able to break through consistently ever since getting promoted.
Karabo Molefe, the 20-year- old who has been part of the first team, is seen as one for the future, but this publication understands that the Glamour Boys will also look outside the walls of Naturena Village for a shot-stopper who can have a big impact and possibly even fill the shoes that Khune will leave once the curtain comes down on his glorious playing career.
The club, however, will not be rushing into the decision, as they will be assessing the matter throughout the season.
In what capacity should Khune find himself in the next stage of his career? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
