Allesandro Du Plessis is yet to break into the Orlando Pirates first team – however, he could be lost to local football altogether with European interest in his services understood to be mounting.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper has been part of the Soweto giants' DStv Diski Challenge side, where he has been pushing to grab the number one jersey in coach Joseph Makhanya's side. He joined from Highlands Park in August last year.
Siya sources in the know have informed this publication that Du Plessis' performances have managed to garner European interest. According to one well-placed source, two teams in Spain and Belgium have expressed an interest in the Gqeberha-born player.
"Two clubs have reached out – Malaga in Spain and KRC Gent (from Belgium). Both teams was impressed with the keeper's aerial ability and one-on-one shot-stopping and the way he commands his defence," the source said.
With youngster Kopano Thuntsane having left the Houghton-based side following the arrival of Melusi Buthelezi from TS Galaxy, there has been talk of a possible promotion to the first team for the stocky net minder, with a view of grooming him for first-team football in the not-too-distant future.
