Uncertain Futures: Sundowns Defender's Contract Decision

A Mamelodi Sundowns defender is awaiting clarity from the club regarding his future as his contract nears its conclusion.

Kenyan international Brian Onyango is in the final two months of his current contract, which is set to expire in June at the season's end, leaving his future uncertain.

Siya sources close to the club and the player have indicated that discussions between the player, his representatives, and the club about his future are yet to commence.

The sources added that it's currently challenging to predict the player's fate given the ongoing negotiations with various team members.

"Brian Onyango's situation is one of the most tricky situations at the club right now. He doesn't know his future. He doesn't know whether he will be staying at the team or not. His current contract ends at the end of this season and looking at the way things are happening for him at the moment I don't think they will keep him," said the Siya source.

"There are a lot of defenders in his position and they can't be keeping him for another season. He is not the only one in such a situation. There are other players as well who really don't know what's happening with them," the source told Soccer Laduma.

A second Siya source stated that at the end of Onyango's contract last year, the club had a two-year option but only exercised one year, which is ending in June this year.

"The one year they exercised was to see what will happen this season with other defenders but now it seems its clear they won't be exercising the other one year option. They are just waiting for the season to finish then they will make the decisions on all the players whose contracts are coming to an end including Brian (Onyango). So, for now he doesn't know his future as there are no talks at all involving him," the source observed.

The 29-year-old Kenyan joined Sundowns in 2020 from Maritzburg United. This season, he has played only three PSL games, two Caf Champions League games, one African Football League fixture and three other SA domestic Cup games.

Onyango is usually competing for places with Mosa Lebusa, Grant Kekana and Mothobi Mvala, among others.

Soccer Laduma contacted Mamelodi Sundowns and the club decided not to comment on this story.
