Patience Running Out? Closing The Royal AM Chapter

Patience Running Out? Closing The Royal AM Chapter

The Premier Soccer League is believed to be losing patience over the situation of Royal AM and wants the chapter closed as soon as possible, the Siya crew has been informed.

The South African Revenue Services (SARS) has gone silent after it was revealed that they would provisionally announce the successful offer for the club on March 17. Reports revealed that there has been interest in the club, with some offers going as far as R20 million, which is R5 million more than the starting bidding price.

The curator of SARS took over the club in an effort to recover the R40 million in taxes Royal AM owed by their owner Shauwn Mkhize. As part of the process, the club was put up for sale, with interested buyers given an opportunity to bid.

While the public has been waiting to hear who the next owner of Royal AM will be, the PSL is believed to be unhappy at how long the situation is dragging out for.

According to information received by the Siya crew, the PSL wants Mkhize to make representation on why the team should not be expelled from the PSL. It's understood that this "representation" is meant to be made this week. What's challenging for the PSL is the matter of selling the club is being handled by the curator of SARS, meaning they don't have much of a say on when the matter can be finalised.

It makes it difficult for the league because they want to ensure that the season finishes on time and there will hardly be any room for them to extend the campaign because Mamelodi Sundowns are taking part in the FIFA Club World Cup from May, and there are end of season play offs as well to factor in.

The Siya crew understands that the PSL is in favour of expelling the club and their patience is slowly running out.

"The curveball is that the league has asked Mam'Mkhize to make a representation on why the team should not be expelled. The league also can't waste time because they want to close this chapter," an informant said to Soccer Laduma.

"So, she has to make the representation this week to say why they should not expel the team because the league can't wait forever. Remember, the situation with the curator (of SARS) is a separate matter that's running. It's got nothing to do with the league. The league can make a decision and say it's expelling the club because it's going to impact the ending of the season. The season has to end on time. Sundowns are going to the Club World Cup, so the season has to end on time. That means Royal AM would need to play 19 games in two months."

Soccer Laduma reached out to SARS and the PSL to get an update and responses on the matter.

"SARS has no further development to report on the matter at present," SARS wrote in a response via email.

The PSL had not responded to the Siya crew by the time this report was published.
