Pirates Urged Not To Repeat Krol 'Mistake'

Pirates Urged Not To Repeat Krol 'Mistake'

Orlando Pirates have been urged not to repeat the same mistake they made when they let go of treble winning coach Ruud Krol at the end of his contract in 2010/11.

Current coach Jose Riveiro is in the final year of his contract with the Buccaneers and there are many supporters who have their fingers crossed that the Spaniard will pen a new deal with the Soweto giants, to ensure there is continuity going into next season.

Riveiro, who has bagged five knockout competition titles since he took over the hot seat, celebrated 100 matches in charge of the Soweto giants last night at Orlando Stadium, against Richards Bay, winning 1-0 to set a new record of seven wins in a row for the Soweto giants. They remain the only side in the league with a 100 percent record.

Bennett Chenene, a former Pirates winger who worked with Krol, has stressed the importance of keeping Riveiro, unlike they did when they did not hold onto the legendary Dutchman over 10 years ago.

"I was there under Krol and I still don't know why he left. He was doing well with the team, so they must not make the same mistake with the current coach," Chenene said to the Siya crew.

"They should try to keep him. Pirates are playing so well. I even wish I could have been younger so that I can play for this current generation. They play good football and what I like about them is that there is no negative news about the players in public.

"I think it will be important for them to add to the squad in January. They need to reinforce because the Champions League games will be tough, so they will have a lot of games. Signing a few players in January will help them a lot. I am happy for now, but it will be important to improve on the squad."

Orlando Pirates beat Richards Bay 1-0 in PSL action on Wednesday night, to make it seven wins out of seven this season so far.
