TS Galaxy booked their spot in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup after defeating third-tier side Amavarara 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Nedbank Cup
Result: TS Galaxy 2-0 Amavarara
Date: 12 February 2023
Venue: Bidvest Stadium
Galaxy made wholesale changes to the side that held Kaizer Chiefs to a goalless draw, as new signing Yaimil Rodriguez was handed his first start, with players such as Masilake Phohlongo and Kamogelo Sebelebele given a run in the line-up.
The Rockets had a respite from league duties, where they are hovering just above the relegation zone while Amavarara had nothing to lose, representing the Eastern Cape region, where they are top of their ABC Motsepe League stream.
Galaxy found resistance from the visitors in the early stages but eventually broke the deadlock just before the break through the shot of Sphiwe Mahlangu in the box.
Just after Sead Ramovic's charges cracked the code, they quickly doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to a shot by Phohlongo in the box from a similar attacking move.
Galaxy looked to consolidate the result coming from the break and on the hour-mark they shored up their midfield with the introduction of Orebotse Mongae and a debut for Mpho Mathekgane.
Ramovic's men closed the game in the latter stages, as they were not threatened by Amavarara and booked their spot in the round of 16.
Galaxy will resume their league schedule next Saturday when they travel to AmaZulu while Amavarara will be looking to take their experience in maintaining their lead at the top of the third-tier log with a game in hand against Thohoyandou FC next Saturday.
Here's how they lined up:
TS Galaxy: Van der Linde, Mere, Msimango, Sanoka, M.Mahlangu, Mlambo, Phohlongo, Hlongwane, Sebelebele, Medina Rodriguez, S.Mahlangu.
Subs: Kolak, Mongae, Parker, Mbunjana, Mathekgane, Nyama, Traore, Radebe, Seema
