Nedbank Cup Last 32 Report: Stellenbosch v Baroka FC 11 February 2022

Baroka FC secured passage to the Nedbank Cup last 16 after defeating high-flying Stellenbosch FC on Friday evening.

Nedbank Cup Last 32

Result: Stellenbosch 0-1 Baroka FC

Date: 11 February 2022

Venue: Danie Craven Stadium

The visitors handed a debut to new signing Mbombi, while Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Juan Ortiz were handed their debuts for Stellies after joining last month.

These two sides clashed just before the league to a break, as Steve Barker's charges secured a 1-0 win at the same stadium.

The game got off to a lively start, with Junior Mendieta getting through to Baroka defence on nine minutes however the Stellies midfielder was denied by Elvis Chipezeze.

Other than Mendieta's early opening, both sides struggled to carve out chances thereafter although the game was still being played at a lively tempo.

Here are some of the PSL deals to have taken place during the January transfer winow:

After a scoreless first half, Stellies should have been ahead just before the hour mark when Ortiz was picked out in the box, but the South American failed to hit the target from close range.

The hosts were made to rue that miss as Baroka broke the deadlock on 72 minutes substitute Thami Masiya intercepted a poor back pass before rifling the ball past Sage Stephens just seconds after his introduction.

With time running out for Stellenbosch, head coach Steve Barker introduced Judas Moseamedi and Robyn Johannes for Jabaar and Ortiz in the final 10 minutes.

Unlike the league encounter between these two sides in December, there would be no late goal for the home side as the Limpopo outfit saw off waves of attack to seal their spot in the next round.

Here's how they lined up:

Stellenbosch: 17. Stephens, 24. Kwinika, 26. Mcaba, 7. Van Rooyen, 3. Letsoenyo, 6. SN. Mthethwa, 27. Jabaar, 23. Adams, 15. Ortiz, 10. Mendieta, 9. Du Preez
