Sekhukhune United crashed out of the Nedbank Cup at the first hurdle after losing to GladAfrica Championship side Platinum City Rovers on penalties.

Result: Platinum City Rovers 1-1 Sekhukhune United (Rovers won 3-2 penalties)

Date: 12 February 2022

Venue: Olen Park

Rovers were not short of experience in their ranks as former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Oupa Manyisa was handed a start along with former SuperSport United striker Thabiso Nkoana.

Sekhukhune got off to the perfect start as captain Yusuf Maart opened the scoring after just three minutes into the first half.

The visitors then had a ball in the net for a second time on 23 minutes when new signing Charlton Mashumba nodded home from close range, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

While BabinaNoko enjoyed a dominant first-half spell, the GladAfrica Championship side struggled to carve out any serious openings as goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata barely had a save to make.

Here are some of the PSL deals to have taken place during the January transfer winow:

It was more of the same for the DStv Premiership side in the second half, although clear-cut chances were hard to come by on both ends of the pitch.

Rovers nearly pulled a goal back on 70 minutes after an error in the Sekhukhune defence, however, Cheslyn Jampies showed great desire to get back and save his side.

The hosts went even closer five minutes later when Mbulelo Wagaba rattled the frame of the goal before Nsabata was able to clear for the Sekhukhune.

That proved to be the final big opening at goal until the final minute of stoppage time, as Rovers sent the match to extra-time thanks to an equaliser with practically the final kick of the game.

Sekhukhune had the chances to end the tie in extra-time but were let down by their finishing as the game proceeded to a penalty shoot-out.

However, it was the men from the second tier who got the job done by scoring three of their penalties after Sekhukhune missed three of their spot-kicks.

Here's how they lined up:
