Gallants Ease Into Nedbank Cup Last 16

Marumo Gallants secured their spot in the next round of the Nedbank Cup after defeating Magesi FC 3-1 on Tuesday evening.

Gallants interim coach Raymond Mdaka handed a first start to January signing Judas Moseamedi in the attack, while Boitumelo Pheko, Matome Kgoetyane, Monde Mphambaniso were also re-called to the starting line-up.

Magesi, meanwhile, had a couple experienced campaigners in their line-up, which included former Baroka FC duo Elvis Chipezeze and Manuel Kambala.

The home reached the final last season and faced lower league opposition on two occasion, including fourth division side Santos FC in the firts round.

Gallants found the breakthrough on 27 minutes when Letsie Koapeng bagged his second goal of the season after converting a penalty.

Last season's runners-up managed to double their lead on the stroke of halftime, with Moseamedi marking his first start with his first goal of the club.

There was enough time for Gallants to add another goal, as Tebogo Thangwane opened his account for the season as the hosts took a commanding lead to the break.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship side gave themselves some hope just before the hour mark, with Kagiso Selemela pulling a goal back for his side. The visitors threw on Tlou Masegela and Mthokozisi Msomi for Mervyn Matima and Bafedile Baloyi for the final 15 minutes in the second half.

However, Gallants had done enough in the first half with three goals to seal their spot in the round of 16 and will now switch focus to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages this weekend.
