SuperSport United were crowned 2017 MTN8 champions on Saturday, October 14 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, as they fought back from a 1-0 deficit, winning the encounter on penalties.
Speaking in the post-match press conference, McCarthy revealed why he opted to leave Patosi on the bench during the encounter, despite the player's influential contribution to the City side during their journey to the final of the competition.
"I think as a coach that is one of the decisions and one of the faults that you have to take. I think we tried to also equally match them and I took Teko Modise off where I should have brought in Patosi and there, I accept that maybe, inexperience kicked in or the excitement when you saw that it is closer to the 90 minutes and you're winning.

"…let's just close the midfield, close the back and then maybe you can hold on and win it and be remarkable for your first stint as a manager and being in that situation, I also got a little bit carried away and then I brought on Putsche where I should have brought on Patosi because they were clearly on the back foot and you saw the damage Teko was doing."
"So yeah, I accept maybe not the right substitutions at that moment in time," he added.
