Chiefs made only change from their win over Cape Town City in the MTN8 quarter-finals, as Ranga Chivaviro started in place of Ashley Du Preez.
Amakhosi looked to get openings with combination play early and they should have been ahead on 11 minutes after Chivaviro latched on a cross unmarked in the box but he guided his free header just over the crossbar.
The Rockets took the game to Chiefs, as they forced them to defend from deep and the visitors had an injury blow just before the half-hour mark after Chivaviro limped off the pitch clutching his hamstring and was replaced by Christian Saile.
Molefi Ntseki's charges still looked to get out of their half on transitions and Saile had a big chance just before the interval after a ball over the top but his diagonal shot missed the bottom corner by a whisker.
Galaxy had a strong penalty appeal on the stroke of halftime after a cross struck Sifiso Hlanti's hand in the box but the referee waved play on, as the sides remained deadlocked at halftime.
Sead Ramovic's men had a perfect start in the second stanza as they broke the deadlock four minutes from the break after Vidal's shot in the box hit the post and ricocheted off goalkeeper Brandon Petersen and found the back of the net.
Given Msimango had a glorious chance to put Chiefs level just after the hour-mark from a cross but guided a free header over the crossbar from close range.
Ntseki responded with changes to effect the game after that, as Mduduzi Shabalala replaced Tebogo Potsane on the left wing and with 15 minutes to go, Samkelo Zwane came on for Mduduzi Mdantsane.
Petersen kept Chiefs in the game in the dying minutes as he produced a couple important saves to deny Kamogelo Sebelebele twice in quick succession.
However, Amakhosi were outnumbered on their attacks in the tail end and were unable to carve out chances, as Galaxy held on to claim a win that took them up to third on the table.
