Why Chiefs Could Change Approach Against SuperSport

Why Chiefs Could Change Approach Against SuperSport

Kaizer Chiefs will face one of the resurgent teams in their next encounter in the DStv Premiership.

Chiefs remained in lowly 14th position on the table after rescuing a 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants on Sunday.

The Glamour Boys will be up against one of the club's former coaches, Gavin Hunt when the Soweto giants take on SuperSport United in their next outing on Saturday evening.

Soccer Laduma looks at the areas Amakhosi would need to improve in relation to their opponent:

Defence

Chiefs have shown frailties defending set-pieces so far, particularly in their game against Stellenbosch in the MTN8 quarterfinal.

Amakhosi will be tested in this regard, given that SuperSport, especially under Hunt, have a reputation for being a team that specializes in scoring from set-plays.

The Glamour Boys' defence was caught ball watching in a goal they conceded against Gallants and Zwane was frustrated after the game that they did not put pressure on the ball.

"That one player made a run from deep and four of our players just standing and we always say when there's no pressure on the ball it's an open centre," Zwane said after the game.

"And none of them [put pressure on the ball] and the ball hit Zitha's knee, then fell on the path of [Makudubela] and they punished us," he said.

To stop SuperSport from playing crosses, Chiefs will have to improve their pressure on the player with the ball.

Midfield

The combination of Siyethemba Sithebe and Yusuf Maart has not lived up to expectations so far and with Dillan Solomons currently preferred as a right-back, Njabulo Blom could be pushing to feature in midfield after he was left out of the two games prior to the draw against Gallants.

Blom replaced Maart, who had an apparent knock, in the dying minutes of the game.

"There's competition for places, it's not easy and I've got a headache making decisions about who to start with. It is healthy competition and that's what I like," Zwane said via the club's official website.

Attack

Zwane felt they were let down by "poor decision-making in the final third" against Gallants but was happy they finally scored from a set-piece situation.

"We just could not get it right and we had to score from a dead ball situation which is something that I'm happy about because we have also not been getting our dead ball situations right. So maybe that will help us to gain confidence in terms of dead ball situations," Zwane said after the match.

The Chiefs mentor will be looking to vary his attack with tall striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana. However, '10111' has cautioned against throwing in new recruits, including the Burundian at the deep end.

"Dove and Caleb are coming on well. We don't want to put them under pressure, we want them to settle in well with the hope that when they come in they add value," Zwane said via the club's website.

"We have no doubt they've got good quality, we need to bring everyone on board in terms of understanding the way we want to play and then try and incorporate everyone who is new in the setup," he added.
