With Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung having confirmed that the club is unlikely to sign new players in this transfer window, a former Amakhosi star has weighed in on the club's decision.
Following the arrival of several players at Naturena in the previous transfer window, Motaung says the plan is to give everyone a chance to play before making further decisions on movements.
Interim coach Cavin Johnson has been lauded for improving the team's performances and results and the club is seeing no need to tamper with the team.
Former crowd favourite, Ntokozo 'Koloba' Sikhakhane, is supporting the club's decision and says he is hoping for a long tenure for Johnson.
The Good
"I have to respect the decision of the management regarding their plans for the transfer window. It's what they have decided on and want to do for the club to go forward and I can't dispute that. I am of the view that we should allow coach Cavin Johnson to carry on with the good job that he is doing and just monitor the results. At the end of the day, the game of football is about results, and if the results are good, I don't see why he should be replaced by a new coach. What I like about Cavin is that he is a development coach, and he gives youngsters the opportunity to play. Chiefs are known for developing quality youngsters for the first team and Cavin is overseeing that," said Sikhakhane.
The Bad
"Going to Europe for example to look for a new coach could set the team back as that person may have to start from scratch. Moreover, a new coach will be under pressure and might not be interested in playing young players. Obviously, a new coach will be expected to hit the ground running to win trophies and the league. Chiefs are known for winning trophies and that's what the new coach will be expected to achieve. And not only that, but he will also be expected to play good football, which might be a challenge for someone new in the country and in the league," the ex-midfielder added.
The Ugly
"We can't be negative towards coach Cavin by doubting him. If we keep on talking about bringing other coaches, it could be another way of saying that we don't believe in the capabilities of the man currently in charge of the team. We have to give him our full support all the way. My message is that let's support Cavin Johnson in the same way we would do to a foreign coach. Give him all the resources and let him fail if he fails," he said.
"It is not a matter of just kicking the ball"
"Look at the results under coach Cavin and how the team has been playing and you be the judge. Chiefs have been playing good football under him and the results are improving. You can see the body language of the players that they have been enjoying themselves. They want to play, and it is not a matter of just kicking the ball and hope. You can see the likes of Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Samkelo Zwane are rejuvenated now. The team can now combine four-five touches while going forward and creating goalscoring opportunities. It's been a while since the team went something like four or five games without a loss and now it's happening under Cavin. One can see the direction that the team is going, and it is pleasing to see," concluded Sikhakhane.
Should Chiefs offer Johnson the permanent head coach position?
