"Banyana Ba Style" to BrandStorytelling '24
After the major news of "Banyana Ba Style," a personal project of Downs chairman Thlopie Motsepe, being added on Netflix in November last year, the film has garnered more international acclaim.
The documentary is being featured as an official selection at BrandStorytelling 2024 in the Feature Film category. BrandStorytelling is currently taking place this week and ends on 20 January.
It's also a Sanctioned Event of the famous Sundance Film Festival and it is taking place in the United States.
The documentary follows the Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies Team as they fight to become the first winners of the CAF Women's Champions League in 2021.
It also shines a spotlight on the battle for gender equality in the sport, life's challenges and family responsibilities and heartfelt human connections, as mentioned by the club on their site.
This story of grit and perseverance follows the journey of Jerry Tshabalala's troops through the point of view of the head coach, the club chairman Tlhopie Motsepe, and players Andile Dlamini and Nonhlanhla Mthandi, among other key voices.
Last year, Motsepe revealed the intentions behind the creation of this impactful film:
"We embarked on this journey for two reasons: The first was to promote women's football and inspire future generations of female footballers in Africa.
"The second reason was to use the power of storytelling to touch on the challenges that female soccer players face and encourage new sponsors to come into the market and galvanise the women's game.
"We are incredibly proud to share our story with fans of film and fans of football across the world. Credit must go to our ladies team players for their spirit and amazing personalities, as well as Fell and Co for producing the film; and of course, to Netflix and Roc Nation Sports International for sharing this unique African sports story with the world," concluded Motsepe.
