Pirates Vs Swallows: Soweto Giants Bring Football x Fashion To SA

Looking ahead of the Original Soweto Derby, we look at why Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows' investment in local fashion is important.

Check it out!

What's the story?

This season has seen two major DStv Premiership outfits collaborate with local fashion brands for their kits.

The Buccaneers' home and away kits were designed by one of South Africa's most prominent fashion industry figures, with Maswaiswai collaborating with a streetwear brand.

Let's take a closer look at the importance of club's collaborating with fashion brands...

Swallows Pirates believe in local fashion

Before the start of the 2023/24 season, the Original Soweto Giants, Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows showed their appreciation and support to local fashion by collaborating with SA brands for their kit designs.

The Buccaneers' adidas home and away kits for this season were put together by award-winning fashion designer Thebe Magugu, who runs a self-titled luxury brand.

The Beautiful Birds went a step further and announced streetwear brand Drip Sportif as their technical sponsor, replacing Umbro.

Both sets of kits stand out as one of the best we've seen this season, with Pirates' away pistachio green kit and Swallows' maroon home strip going down as potential classics.

The lines between football and fashion are merging more after each season and it's important to see South African football teams jump on the trend, considering the country's wealth of talent in fashion.

Some of the biggest clubs in the world like AC Milan (Off-White), Inter Milan (Moncler) PSG (Dior), Manchester City, (Dsquared2) and Real Madrid (Zegna) are working with the biggest fashion brand in the world to enhance the image of their clubs and to get the players looking good before stepping onto the pitch to handle business.

Pirates and Swallows' work with Thebe Magugu and Drip respectively could set a trend in the PSL of clubs working closer with Proudly South African fashion brands to add a new flavour their brands off the pitch, which is something that overseas clubs are embracing in large numbers.
