Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies began their CAF Champions League group stage campaign with a 1-0 win over Vihiga Queens FC on Saturday afternoon.
Sundowns secured their spot in the first-ever women's Champions League group stages after defeating Zimbabwe's Black Rhinos 3-0 in the COSAFA qualifying final in September.
Sundowns opened the scoring after just three minutes courtesy of a composed finish from Melinda Kgadieta, who has registered the club's first-ever goal in the group stages.
The South African champions continued dominating as the first half went on, although the Queens defence and goalkeeper did well to keep the score low after the continued pressure.
The Kenyan side did manage to create a a couple openings of their after the interval, but Sundowns goalkeeper Asa Rabalao popped up with some vital blocks.
Rabalao came to the rescue once again after 65 minutes to keep Sundowns ahead while Chuene Morifi made a vital interception 10 minutes later to deny Vihiga Queens.
Sundowns were able to hold out for the remaining stages of the second to secure maximum points and they will look to continue that momentum against Rivers Angels on Tuesday evening.
