CAF Champions League Report: Kaizer Chiefs v Wydad Casablanca 26 June 2021

CAF Champions League

Result: Kaizer Chiefs 0-0 Wydad Casablanca (1-0 agg.)

Date: 26 June 2021

Venue: FNB Stadium

Kaizer Chiefs have qualified for their first-ever CAF Champions League final with a 1-0 aggregate win over Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca.

Chiefs made two changes change with Daniel Akpeyi and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo replacing Bruce Bvuma Leonardo Castro, who missed out through injury. Wydad, meanwhile, made one alteration with Simon Msuva coming into the side.

With two minutes gone, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo launched a counter that found Samir Nurkovic who won a corner. Ngcobo took the resulting corner and Nurkovic shot narrowly wide.

Chiefs then had a scare at the back but Akpeyi recovered by making a save to keep out Aymane Hassouni before the Nigerian shot-stopper did well to keep out Ayoub El Kaabi's strike from distance.

Wydad defender Achraf Dari then conceded a corner. Reeve Frolser took it and found an unmarked Bernard Parker, but the Chiefs captain headed wide.

Akpeyi then made a good save to deny Mohammed Ounajem's shot on target as rhe Moroccans were all over Amakhosi and had Akpeyi to thank for still being level.

The North Africans came close in the 58th minute when Ounajem delivered into the box for Muaid Ellafi, who headed narrowly over as the Glamour Boys breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Soon after, Frosler's pinpoint delivery found Nurkovic between two defenders and the Serb headed the ball into the ground en route to the top cop right corner but it was tipped away for a corner in the nick of time.

Wydad were piling on the pressure with Ellaifi, Ayoub El Kaabi and Yahia Attiyat Allah all firing narrowly wide of Akpeyi's goal.

Chiefs were clinging on, having to defend corner after corner but Siyabonga Ngezana and Mathoho were up to the task, dominating the aerial duel.

And Amakhosi held on to come away with the historic victory despite having only 32 percent of the possession throughout, showing just how good their defensive performance was.

Here's how they lined up:

Chiefs: Akpeyi, Mathoho, Cardoso, Ngezana, Sasman, Frosler, Katsande, Blom, Ngcobo, Parker, Nurkovic.

Subs:  Khune, Mphahlele, Baccus, Mashiane, Matsheke.
