Danny Jordaan, the SAFA president, says there's a growing list of female referees knocking on the door to be in charge of top-flight matches.
The Premier Soccer League only has Akhona Makalima as the only DStv Premiership ref, while others are assistants.
"All our Hollywoodbets matches are handled by referees, we have never had so many women referees and some of them are also serving in CAF. Akhona is probably the one that stands out, but there are many of them out there," Jordaan told the Siya crew.
"They are already handling the Hollywoodbets games, and many of them are being used by COSAFA and from there they go to CAF and FIFA, young referees with potential. We are dealing with the review committee on this matter, which is the same with coaches."
He said the focus in the coming months will not only be on making sure women have more of a representation as match officials but also as coaches!
"When we came in (the new regime in 2014) all the women teams were coached by men – we removed all the men. Of course, we were criticised and there was an argument that the women do not have any coaching experience and whatever. But we brought Vera Pauw and she put Desire Ellis as her assistant," Jordaan explained.
"We asked Vera when she left if Desire was ready, and the odd thing is that it's the women in South Africa that said she wasn't. But we said we won nothing with male coaches on the women team, so we decided to go a different direction, gave them the experience and look at what happened. The teams were successful – Banyana Banyana made it to the Afcon final and they qualified for their first World Cup in 2019 and are now one of the best national teams. The same with Mamelodi Sundowns women's team – these are the things we can be proud of."
