Thulani Hlatshwayo's trophy cabinet is one to be revered. The 31-year-old has achieved unparalleled success in the local game, and there are very few trophies that he has not lifted. However, Tyson says his greatest achievement has been off the field of play.
The tough-as-nails defender says buying his mother a house in Protea Glen is one of the greatest achievements of his life.
"As a black kid growing up, you can buy fancy things and nice cars – but there is one thing that you need to do. Buy your mom a house," Tyson recently told Soccer Laduma at an event staged by adidas.
"You will see the blessings. I always say women are very strong - to be able to go through what they go through and still love their children unconditionally, shows their strength. Being able to provide for my mother, knowing everything that she has done for me, has to be one of my greatest achievements and as long as I am still breathing, I will take care of her," he said.
As the father of two boys, Tyson says he tries to instil that same #impossibleisnothing attitude in them, even if it means not giving them any shortcuts because of his football hero status.
"When it comes to my kids, I love them and support them as a father, regardless of what they choose to do. I always tell them that I'm trying to give them something that I never had. My father was not that present in my life, and I grew up without him. I was raised by a single mother.
"Being boys, they tell me that they want to play soccer, and I've made it clear that they don't have to play soccer just because it's what Daddy does. You have to be good to make it, and I don't want a case of just because you're my son, you get selected for certain teams, no. The talent needs to be there, and they will need to earn their place," he concluded.
We look forward to seeing what the future holds.
