5 Winners & 5 Losers After Euro 2020 Postponement

5 Winners & 5 Losers After Euro 2020 Postponement

On Tuesday, UEFA announced the postponement of Euro 2020, which is set to have a massive impact across Europe. Here are the biggest winners, including English giants Liverpool and Percy Tau's Club Brugge, and the biggest losers following the decision.

Premier League leaders Liverpool are arguably the biggest winners from UEFA's decision to postpone the tournament. The Reds boast a 25-point lead at the top of the table over reigning champions Manchester City and, with the season looking likely to proceed, are set to claim a first league title in 30 years.

The decision will have also come as a boost to the Wales national team, who now have another year for young players such as Ben Woodburn, Ethan Ampadu, Dylan Levitt and Neco Williams to develop. They will also be able to call upon injured talisman Joe Allen, who will have recovered from a long-term injury by the time the rescheduled tournament comes around.

Other winners include Lazio striker Ciro Immobile, who is currently leading the race to win the European Golden Shoe ahead of the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and Odion Ighalo, who will be hoping to impress in order to make his loan move to Manchester United permanent at the end of the season.

Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau could also be a big winner with Club Brugge facing a similar situation in the league standings as Liverpool. Should Tau continue to feature consistently for the Belgian outfit and win the league, his chances of obtaining a work permit to play for parent club Brighton Hove Albion will increase.

Although it is universally agreed that the decision to postpone Euro 2020 is the right call, UEFA themselves are also losers from their own decision. The European football governing body could reportedly lose up to €300 million (R5.5 billion) as a result of the postponement of the world's second-largest international football tournament.

Not everyone will be thrilled by the decision, however, least of which is the Belgium national team. The highest-ranked nation in the world were one of the favourites for the tournament but have an ageing squad that includes the likes of Vincent Kompany and Dries Mertens, who will now be a year older by the time the Euros come around.

Cristiano Ronaldo could also lose out on a big milestone as a result in the year-long postponement. The Portugal star, who will be 36 by the time of the next Euros, is currently 10 goals behind Ali Daei's all-time record of 109 international strikes, and the chances of breaking the record become slimmer with each passing year.

Other losers include Manchester City, who are now destined to relinquish their Premier League title and who still face the prospect of a ban from the UEFA Champions League, as well as FIFA, who now have to find a new date for the newly revamped Club World Cup tournament.
